Your personal academic website serves as a central hub for information about your research, teaching, and publications. It can help you market your books, let people find you for cool opportunities, and help tremendously when you’re looking for a job within academia or beyond.
Your department or graduate school webpage is a good start, but departmental pages usually don’t allow you to quickly and easily make changes or updates (without going through a university IT department). They also usually have limited options for layout, content, and integrations. Building your own gives you complete control over these things.
