Event description
Want to break into drag but don’t know where to start? Want to learn how to be fabulous onstage? Want to be inspired by Philly’s long and diverse history of drag cultures? Come to our Drag 101 workshop where you can learn from some of Philadelphia’s most renown drag performers. This hands-on workshop offers instruction on how to create a drag persona, how to find music and costumes, how to create choreography, and how to put together a drag act on a budget.
Artist bios
Presenters include Ricky Paul (Artistic Director of the Dumpsta Players), Sara Sherr (performer with the Dumpsta Players, and hostess of Sing your Life Karaoke), and Messapotamia Lefae (post-gender sartorialist, and performer with the Dumpsta Players).
The Dumpsta Players is a monthly themed interactive improvisational theatre experience that parodies society’s joys and ills in an irreverent and over-the-top style. Dumpsta was chosen as a name because the company recycles costumes, actors, characters, and comic bits month after month. Dumpsta also brings to mind the trashy nature of our performing–drag queens, genderfuck, and all walks of life come together and express joy, rage and general chaos through live mic and lipsynched sketches once a month!
This event is co-sponsored by DP Arts Consortium, and arts/education nonprofit advocating gender equity and queer performance in our communities. DP Arts offers a wide variety of educational programs (workshops, speaker panels, acting and performance classes), as well as sponsors the Dumpsta Players.
